The following is part of a series about homelessness in Lanark County.

There’s a man, let’s call him Joe, who is working full-time at a minimum wage job. His marriage ended a year ago and he and his four children have been staying with his sister. He doesn’t earn enough to pay rent on housing that would accommodate a family of five. He’d like a three-bedroom place but says he would make two bedrooms work.

Then then there’s the single mother of two special needs...

Branch 240 Almonte of the Royal Canadian Legion will be doing some renovations at the Almonte Cenotaph in the coming weeks. The Almonte Cenotaph was erected in 1923, in honour of our Veterans. Branch 240 Almonte would like it to last another 100 years.

Mississippi Mills Fire Department Underlines Importance of Proper Disposal of Ashes

In the last few weeks, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department has responded to six grass/structure fires, five of which ignited from discarded ashes.

Many people don’t realize the length of time required for ashes to cool enough for disposal. Coals and ashes from fires can remain hot enough to reignite and start a fire for many days after the fire is out. Total Burn Ban Lifted - April 5, 2024

The Mississippi Mills Fire Department has lifted the total burn ban for the Municipality, effective Friday, April 5, 2024.

Burn Level Status is currently set at Level 1, which means conditions are optimal for burning.

Reminder: All residents must have an active 2024 burn permit before any type of burning, including campfires, burn barrels, chimeneas and brush piles. No burning is permitted between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from April 1 to October 31.
